Old enough?

My son, Jay, wants to be allowed to stay home on occasion alone and would like to eventually (maybe next year) be allowed to go to school on his own from home, as opposed to from the daycare program he currently is in now.
He will be turning 11 this year (in a few months actually) and he will be going into the 5th grade.

ACK!!!!

Isn't he too young??? I think so.. but when I talk to other mothers, they tell me that they have left their kids home alone who are younger than Jay.

ACK!!!!!

Now, in my state, you must be 13 years old to babysit, so I always assumed the legal age to leave a child alone is 13, right? I have spoken to a friend who works for the state child protective agency and she felt that Jay was old enough and it was legal and she didn't think it would be considered a case of neglect.

I am not ready to allow him to babysit his little brother, but do you think he is old enough to be left home alone, or to be allowed to come home by himself after school?

What do you think?

I was home alone a lot younger than 11. I say it depends on if you think he's mature enough.

I think it depends on the child, not just the age. How mature is he? How responsible? Would he know what to do in case of emergency? Would he open the door to a stranger? How long a period are we talking about?

tina... He's somewhat mature, sometimes. He's a boy!! I think he will be okay after school for an hour, because he basically just goes into his room now and plays video games. It's his way to decompress from his day... He would have to call me right away, so I knew he was home, and has my neighbor next door who is a teacher in his school.... so maybe....

oh. my...
